Don Cheke’s TurboCAD Training

If you ever get to sit on the round table of TurboCAD experts Don Cheke will be amongst the gathering. On his site, www.textualcreations.ca, you will find many superb examples of Don’s work. On the IMSI site there is a showcase of examples of TurboCAD drawings by Don and several others which display the wide capabilities of TurboCAD. One of my favourites are the David Mullins drawings, although not what you immediately think of when you think of CAD.

Don produces tutorials, which are very detailed and carful not to leave the less experienced behind. They come as a PDF either as a download or on a disk. Because so many people ask me about training on a regular basis Avanquest are going to start to sell these on their www.turbocad.co.uk site. However, this process always takes longer than you think it should, so they will not be visible for a month or so. In the meantime if anyone would like a forward copy, then give me a call, or send an e-mail with your phone number and I’ll call you.

There are four and below are Don’s comments and descriptions of each one.

The Radial Engine tutorial

Introduction:

I have wanted to create a tutorial for a radial engine for eons but always felt a bit intimidated by the idea. However, like any good modeler, I decided to face the challenge and see what I could come up with. To my surprise and pleasure, the task was not terribly difficult in the end. It just required some forethought, a bit of time spent researching and the drive to make it happen, which I already have in spades, as the saying goes. Although I based the radial engine on some internet photos I found while researching, much of the model was made up as I experimented with the design.

I hope that you will enjoy following the tutorial and will feel the magic of TurboCAD that I feel every time I create something with the program.

Best regards,

Don

Within the tutorial the reader will be lead through each keystroke to produce every component of the radial engine that is illustrated on the cover of the tutorial. The reader will learn how to create all the components using 2D profiles and modified 3D primitive shapes. The reader will learn how to insert standard lighting, how utilize render scene luminance and render scene environment. Additionally, the reader will learn how to render their drawing and save it in a high resolution image format.

Note: For use while using TurboCAD Professional software.

All Textual Creations TurboCAD tutorials are based on the versions for which they were written. Although users of previous and newer versions are welcome to try the tutorials the author cannot state what results will be achieved. Many changes, some subtle and others not so subtle, are made with each program revision. Although many steps and directions would be generic some may not be. The same can be said for tools between versions. Older versions may not have the same tools and newer versions may have simplified techniques that alleviate some of the long drawn out methods needed for earlier versions.

Disc contains: 248 page tutorial file in PDF format, tutorial covers in PDF format should the reader choose to print the tutorial book, plus bonus files.

The Landscape Design tutorial.

Introduction:

Garden and landscape design are topics that are occasionally addressed on the TurboCAD User Conference Forum. It is a little disheartening that those seeking advice are often directed to other programs that have been created specifically for this type of work. Perhaps this is even sound advice if a user is planning on doing garden and landscape design on a full time basis. However, for an occasional design in this particular genre TurboCAD will work just fine. In fact, it is the opinion of the author that TurboCAD would be a great choice providing a user takes time to create a library of landscape and design symbols to help with a speedier creation.

Within this tutorial the reader will be lead through every keystroke to produce the back yard design that is illustrated on the cover of the tutorial. The reader will learn how to create almost all the elements used within the design using 2D profiles and 3D primitive shapes. The reader will learn how to insert free 3D plants found on the internet and a 3D bench created and supplied by the author. The reader will learn how to insert standard lighting and how to use a render scene environment and render scene luminance. The reader will learn how to render their drawing and save it in a high resolution image format. The reader will also learn how to utilize paper space where a final plan layout will be created utilizing viewports and annotations.

The Construction Drawings tutorial.

Introduction:

During the tutorial, the reader will learn how to create the framed 36″ entry door illustrated on the cover of the tutorial, using 2D profiles and 3D primitive shapes. The reader will learn how to create a render scene environment. The reader will learn how to render their drawing and save it in a high resolution image format. The reader will also learn how to utilize paper space where the construction drawings will be created utilizing viewports, inserted drafting palette views, dimensions and annotations. The tutorial will illustrate all these processes with each keystroke.

The Architectural Presentation tutorial.

Introduction:

One of the larger areas where CAD software is employed is within the Architectural industry. Using TurboCAD to create the many drawings and illustrations that are often required for projects will enable the user to produce top notch work in a timely fashion. TurboCAD created drawings and renders will undoubtedly impress clients, contractors and building authorities alike and the user will come away feeling that the time spent on learning to use TurboCAD was time well spent.

TurboCAD Pro V15.1 – Architectural Presentation is a fully illustrated tutorial that leads the beginner through every keystroke necessary to transform IMSI Design’s 2D Marion floor plan into the fully detailed 3D model presented on the cover of this tutorial. This tutorial was originally written for V11.2, but due to the changes in the program since then many changes have been made to the tutorial and lessoned some of the previous long and tedious processes.

  1. Hello Paul
I wish to enquire if the 2D/3D Training Guides are suitable for the TurboCad 16 Deluxe version.
If so, can you please let me know if you have them in stock and at what cost?

    Thanking you in advance,
    John Cuthbert

  2. John,

The books are written for the professional version. Because they are very clear and show the tool pallet that the tools that you are going to use are coming from, it will be clear at each stage whether or not you have the tools needed.

For 2D this will make next to no difference, although in 3D it could be a bit frustrating seeing tools that you don’t have, as your expertise increases, (although fine at the beginning).

If you give me a call, I can get them sent out to you and get a reduction if you want both. They are £35 each, £43 in the US), £60 for the pair. I might even be able to find a pro 16 in the cupboard with a slightly damaged box that can be greatly reduced in price.

What I will say again about these is that they are the best training books I’ve ever seen for CAD.

  3. Dear Paul
I have TurboCad 14 arch.version and i am learning to produce architectural plans elevations and sections with construction notes for planning and building regulation applications. Do you have any training material which would demonstrate the best way to produce these drawings.

    Thanks,
    Ron.

  4. Ron,

Although the question sounds simple, the answer comes in three parts.

The new training books, of which a couple of example pages can be viewed in the v16 section of this blog, are really very good. However they are a general training guide and not aimed at someone drawing house plans. If all you require is 2D, (and you’re sure of that), then buy Designer 2D for £30, it has video training included, also buy the 2D training book and you have all you need for £60, via me. I’d advise drawing the walls using the Double Line Polyline Tool and creating a cavity using the Parallel Double Line Tool. In this way you Hatch the outside, then in interior wall and use the Pick Point Hatch for the cavity if required. (If this is all Greek to you, give me a call, it’s really rather simple).
You could use the Multiline Tool, but that would mean using the Pick Point in all three sections of the wall.
Then there are a few Modify Tools to play with and you have most of what you need.

Secondly, if all you really want at present is 2D, but think that you would like to get into 3D at some point, then buy TC Deluxe v16 and both training books. This will give you all the above and a start in 3D.

And lastly to blow away the opposition, (still using AutoCAD LT to draw house plans in 2D), buy Professional v16, with both sets of ad ons. This will enable you to draw simple 2D house plans quickly and save then in any format needed. It will also give you the ability to view those plans in 3D isometric or in perspective, (and here you are able to vary the angles of the perspective to give your visualisations drama). You can create component walls of any complexity and view these in both 2 and 3D. You can walk through you house. In short you draw the house just once and can then view it in any way or from any direction you wish, raster or vector. A training day comes free with the Professional version.

Learning the 2D is not difficult, it’s just a matter of playing around and going through some exercises in the book. 3D is a little more difficult to understand at first, which is mainly why I run the courses here in Winchester, about one every two weeks.

As always you are free to call me on 01962 835 08 (1), if not there leave a name and number and I’ll get straight back to you. At my desk all week after 11pm Tuesday, 30th June.

    Paul

  5. Ron,

One extra point that I forgot to mention, (I got carried away), is that I have two TurboCAD professionals who would be willing to give you training concerning planning applications, or to view your drawining to ensure that they meet requirements. I’m sure that one day with either of these chaps would give you all you need. It depends upon where you live as to who is nearest, or best suited.

    Give me a call.

    Paul

  6. Dear Paul
Thanks for your advice its really excellent to get such a detailed responce to my question of 26/06/2009 i will call you when ive given it some thought

    Thanks

    Ron

  7. i bought turbocad version 8.0 about two years ago to do model engineering work, still trying to make sence of it.
comes with no instruction and im not that good with computors do you have any training manuals ect that aould help me ? 2d basic would be a great help.
    thanks paul

  8. Hi

After a 5 year absence from CAD I’ve just got a copy of TurboCAD Professional v12. Partly because of the time lapse, and partly because this is my first experience of TurboCAD I could do with a refresher. Can you suggest / supply any tutorials or training manuals that will guide me through the basics of working in both 2D and 3D of this version.

    Cheers

    Andy

  9. The new training books are excellent. They have very clear exercises with tests at the end of each chapter, plus a CD with about 220 video tutorials. They’re on out site for £35, but if you call me I can do them for £30 and at the same time talk you through anything that is particularly giving you a problem.

  10. Hi
I am making some enquires about training. The main reason is that I want to be able to create 2d/3D designs for my cabinet and furniture work. I have the latest v16 which is the Delux edition. I am reasonably computer literate and I have been through the supplied training guides, but some instructions dont quite produce the desired effect! Any suggestions?

  11. Nick,

I’m at my desk most of January so you’re welcome to call to go through a few problems with me.
On the 4th March I’m running a training day for kitchen designers / interior designers. This will be very much a 3D construction training day. Cost is £170 + vat at, present there is just one other booked in.
I’d suggest you give me a call some time with the package open and I’ll go through your present problems, then book a day here in Winchester. By the end of the day I’m sure you’ll be fine. Just one training day makes a huge difference.

  12. Hi Paul
I have a lot of Architectural experience but I never did CAD. I now work in Dispute Resolution in the Construction Industry and have been asked to learn TurboCAD so we are able to demonstrate sequences of As Built for a project.

We have an old version (not sure which one yet) but I have to learn to reproduce building drawings, and it will be in 3D.

Having only worked on a drawing board I really don’t know where to start. I need a basic level online tutorial or some books which can guide me quickly so that I can build up a 3D.

If you recommend a book (as you mention here) can you please tell me the ISBN number ?

(I have just learnt Dreamweaver SC3 through books, tutorials and online videos so hope I can do the same with TurboCAD)

    Keith

  13. Keith,

If you can learn Dreamweaver from books, you’ll find TurboCAD a doddle. The numbers on the back of the training books are 02TCP5163 & 4 although I don’t know where you’d get them apart from me. On line they are £35 each, but I do the pair for £50.

It would save you time if you could give me a call before you started to learn, as with 3D there are a couple of concepts that I can explain in a few minutes that would greatly help you get started. In past jobs I’ve used Quark, In Design, Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc. You will see a few tools that you recognise in TurboCAD, such as the Rubber Stamp tool from Photoshop and format copying tools, but drawing in 3D is a different concept.

I don’t know what version you have, but I would recomend upgrading as the latest version, 16, has some new excellent 3D tools. Firstly it can not only open Google SketchUp drawings, but can save in SketchUp format, this opens up quite a few opportunities. It also has a tool enabling you to section a 3D house, not simply draw a section line and view a 2D section, but actually open up a house as you would with a dolls house and walk inside.

I’m at my desk this week until Thursday noon and then all next week.

  14. Hi Paul
My company are exploring the possibility of using 4D software (a 3D model with a time element included). Currently I am getting a feel for TurboCAD using V8, as previously discussed.

The manual I have is tiring to use and I was wondering if you could help me out with a simple question which would enable me to move on. I have drawn 3 floor plans and want each to be a different level. How do i do this ?

Once I have this done I will attempt to add in the 3D heights elements (although at present I don’t know how to do this).

I appreciate this is not a forum, but if you can help me out I would be greatful
