Thanks for the update Paul. Here's some feedback: Training is quite expensive so there is still significant cost even with this match funding grant. Keeps it a little out of reach for some of us still. If there were some special offer prices on the training to halve cost again, I think it would make the difference required to take up the grant offer. Have decided to attempt to learn in some leisure time and take up the offer only if I hit a brick wall. Best regards, Alan.

Conny,

You can vary the transparency of colours, so perhaps if you made a ‘water’ pattern of several shades of blue and green, you could then play with the transparency slider in the colours pallet.
Alternatively look at www.textualcreations.ca. Don there has some good water effects, he brings pictures in from PaintShop Pro, (Ithink).

Lastly, you could take your pictures into SketchUp and using a photorealistic plug in make it look just like water.

Tony,

I wouldn’t start with v15, it’s a few years old now and not supported by win 7. The latest, v18, is £80, (a bit cheaper via this site), and will be more reliable. If it’s only 2D that you want then this will do everything you need. I’d also recommend a 2D training book, these are excellent and have training films included.
If you later want 3D, then check out Google SketchUp, the combination of the two are used by many others in your line of work.
You’re always welcome to call.

John the CAD.

I have very little skills in useing any type of CAD as I fit kitchens only, now i would like to sit behind the desk doing the designing instead.
Due to an injury my future employment will now be limited but i would like very much to do kitchen design!
Would the IMSI TurboCAD 15 V15 Deluxe 2D/3D Drafting & modeling be the one to start off with? or would you suggest another package..
many thanks

jason,

I'd recommend the 2D training book to start with. They include training a CD of all the training exercises. There must be a supplier nearer to you than me for these, but if not I'm happy to send you one for a few bob extra to cover the postage.
Email me at ptracey@processflows.co.uk

Hi Paul,

I am a carpenter/joiner who has purchased a Turbocad v18. I am however completely new to CAD, and am desperately wanting to learn how to be able to produce both 2d and eventually 3D drawings for my clients to give them a better idea of what I am explaining! Everything from built in cupboards to pergola's, sheds etc. I am in South Africa, so wondered if there was anyway I could get my hands on one of your "turbocad for dummies" manuals here?

Kind regards
Jason

Chris,
I deal with a lot of people in exactly the same situation you are in. You need a CAD system, but don’t want to spend ages learning how to understand the package. The path that I recommend here is the following.
Buy TurboCAD Deluxe v18 and a 2D training book. The book comes with a training CD and Is easy to follow, (you can always call me if you get stuck). Here you do all your 2D planning and measuring. 2D is not hard to learn, or, at least to get going with, but you do need a training book. Also buy Google SketchUp Pro. You’ll import your TurboCAD 2D plans into SketchUp and very easily turn them into 3D representations that you can show clients. You can show them a ‘walk through’ zoom in and out and make changes in front of your customer. So if they suddenly decide that they want a bigger door, or move the sink along a bit, it will take you seconds to change.
What I’ve said above is not hard to learn, there are more complicated roads that you could take, but this one is easy. So once you have bought the packages and had a bit of playing around, you book yourself on a one day course here in Winchester, where we draw up a 2D plan in TurboCAD in the morning and take it into SketchUp in the afternoon. The next such training day is on the 2nd Feb.
