Ade,

We don't have a trial version, but if you go to www.imsidesign.com and look in the trials section you can find a link there. They last for 14 days.

Alan,

You're right, I tell the same thing to all my girlfriends.

But on a slightly more serious note, I do think that SketchUp has a greater chance of moving forward and being more relevant to specific tasks with Trimble than it ever had with Google. Knowing the SketchUp team, I think that they will want to keep the simplicity that it has made it so successful so far, but at the same time provide ‘doors’ into other more exacting areas.
The next year will be interesting.

Paul, you could be right. I am starting to cool off from Google today having thought for a couple of years that they were like the new Romans! Today just been trying to use Google groups and attach a 5.1mb file for collaboration. Seemed to load, no errors, then later the whole topic disappeared, again no warning. Tried again, same. Tried Box.com to do the same thing, different altogether, faster, easier, altogether got the job done more efficiently. I know this is an isolated thing but as far as sentiment goes, good luck Sketchup and Trimble, big isn't necessarily best.

Alan,

Change is always a worry, especially when what you already have suites you. I was a big fan of SketchUp years before I became involved in its’ marketing so obviously I’m wondering, like the rest of you, what direction it will now take. I wouldn’t dare speculate here where it will be going, although I have lots of opinions, you’d have to meet me down the pub to hear them, although I will say that I’m optimistic.

So all we have to look at is the bare facts. Firstly, SketchUp was always going to be a very small part of Google and therefore not seen as a priority. As far as being a tool to populate Google Earth, the reason for its’ original acquisition, it already does as much as it’s needed to, so job done. You just have to look at all the various plug-ins produced by others to see the potential there that was not taken up by SketchUp under Google. Google simply did not allocate enough resources for these to be done internally.

Secondly, Trimble are in a business where SketchUp could be a useful tool for them so I’d guess that they see potential in SketchUp to help in their practical day to day business. It is because I think that they have bought it for practical reasons, (rather than financial), that I am optimistic that the acquisition will bring benefits for us all. The more relevant SketchUp is to the professional job to be done, the more use it will be for all of us.

I must stress that these are just my guesses, my feelings, I don’t sit at the top table in terms of SketchUp’s development. It will be interesting to see what comes up in the following months, but I, for one, am not worried that we will lose anything.

Hmm, struggling to catch your enthusiasm about this, lets hope it really will be a positive move. A lot of community spirit has been put into Sketchup with the public in mind. It needs to stay that way, but how can we be sure now that Google has relinquished control, feels like public spirit has been sold off, we need to watch the Google small print, bit worried about Google's intentions for Google Drive now! Is it all about turning something into cash after all?

Ashley,
If the manufacturing company provides them, then you will certainly be able to open them in TurboCAD. TurboCAD opens and edits far more file formats than most CAD software.

New pricing on the shop.

Is it possible to import manufacturers catalogues in Turbo CAD ? I know with the more expensive packages like Fusion Planit this is possible and makes it much easier to design and then order the parts required.

Thanks

Leigh,

The easiest transition for you would be to go for TurboCAD LTE, which looks and behaves exactly like your old AutoCAD LT, (although offering far more than AutoCAD LT) and then SketchUp for you 3D work. SketchUp is easy to learn and you will be able to import your 2D TurboCAD LTE drawings into it, so saving time. The two packages are completely compatible, so drawings can be swapped between. TurboCAD Pro LTE is £315 and SketchUp Pro £295, both ex vat.

The combination of the pair will give you far more than AutoCAD LT and at half the price and, of course, works in the same file formats as AutoCAD LT and many more, so no problems opening your old drawings.
